What gets a listing suppressed? ▾
Amazon's listing moderation runs in two stages. The first is automated content scanning: phrases like "best seller," "free shipping," and decorative emoji get auto-edited or stripped. The second is policy enforcement: false FDA claims, misuse of trademarked brand names, or unsubstantiated environmental claims can trigger search suppression or full account-level action.
The tool runs against rules drawn directly from Amazon Seller Central docs, FTC guidelines, and major regulator publications. Severity reflects enforcement risk:
- Critical — high enforcement risk (FTC fines, FDA action, immediate suppression)
- Warning — Amazon will likely auto-edit or strip; account-level risk if repeated
- Heads-up — gray zone, often allowed with substantiation; verify before publishing
Not legal advice. For listings under active enforcement, consult a regulatory specialist.
Common questions
What kinds of words does this flag? ▾
Six categories: FTC health claims (cures, treats, FDA approved), Amazon-banned promo language (best seller, top rated, free shipping), self-claimed superlatives (the best, world's best), regulated terms (organic, antibacterial, made in USA), Amazon-restricted symbols and emoji, and major IP marks (Disney, NFL, etc.).
Why does Amazon care about words like "best seller" or "top rated"? ▾
Self-awarded superlatives like "best seller" or "Amazon's Choice" are Amazon-controlled badges. When sellers claim them in copy, Amazon's automated moderation strips the claim or suppresses the listing. Same applies to FTC-regulated language: "FDA approved," "clinically proven," and "all natural" can trigger enforcement action when used without substantiation.
Can I use trademarked names in my listings? ▾
Only if you're actually licensed. The tool flags major IP marks (Disney, NFL, Apple, etc.) so you can verify your authorization before publishing. Brand owners can have unauthorized listings taken down through Amazon's Brand Registry within 24 hours.
Are these rules different per marketplace? ▾
Some are. FTC rules apply only in US listings. EPA pesticide claims, Made in USA, and FSA/HSA-eligible language are US-only. Most Amazon-policy rules (banned emoji, promo language, trademark symbols) apply across all marketplaces. Toggle the marketplace dropdown to scope the ruleset.
